South Boston Reservoir begins operation.
December 27, 1849
[11/20-Simonds] One of several reservoirs built to supply “high water service” to the newly annexed towns, the 7.5 million-gallon reservoir is located on Dorchester Heights. After not being used for many years, it is closed in 1897. The property is taken by the city in 1899 and becomes the site of a new high school in 1901.*
